Most of us just dream of being able to look at the frozen winter lands. Do you also sit in front of your television and think of the day when you will be able to have this chill all around you? Experiencing snowfall in millions of flakes is like nothing you have ever experienced. Your eyes could never get tired of looking at this beauty. Snow is beautiful and fragile and can crumble on your warm fingertips. It molds itself according to your snowman needs. But it is not only that. It is powerful. It can freeze you to your bones. It can be chaotic. It can be what you want it to be.
We all want to slip into the warmest of gloves and mittens and walk into the snow in our boots. We all want to feel the pink flush on our face as we experience such an extreme element. We all want to sit in front of the fireplace with a warm cup of chocolate. We want to slide past people with our expert skiing skills.
Here are few unique but substantial locations to give you the actual chills.
- Rovaniemi
Ho. Ho. Ho. Merry Christmas. The idea of snow pulls us towards Christmas. And what defines Christmas better than our beloved Santa Claus. This city at the edge of the earth is the hometown of Mr. Claus. The colors of red and warmth come right to you. Bells jingle and elves loiter around. One is always too eager to find some proof of Santa around. It is the origin point of one of the biggest mysteries in the world.
Christmas here is a deal like no other. Beyond this view, there is also something else to look forward to. The Northern Lights. The Aurora Borealis is hiding in the sky, waiting for you to come to chase it. No sight could ever beat the brilliance of a sky lit by these colors. Come to the land that stays dark throughout the months. Every night there is a party. Rovaniemi is an entire Christmas tree full of experiences.
- Kirkenes
The beauty of the Arctic looks different from each angle. Go into the borders of Norway to see something distinctly new. Even though the northern lights are the same, the view is all different here. The skies are very pure so there are no clouds and smog to hide it. This tiny town lies there waiting for people to share the beauty with. Visit the snow hotel and lie beneath the lights. This attraction is something to behold. It gets built every year and makes for a huge event.
There are a lot of exhilarating water and snow sports here that will entertain you for years. Boat trips, hike routes, fishing, hunting, bird-watching and many more. This is the rugged paradise. Go onto the specialized winter snowmobiles and dog-sleds too.
- Zermatt
This rustic town lies in the embrace of the Mount of Matterhorn. Despite its tourist prowess, it has still retained most of its raw, original flavor. It is a car-free zone, and you will get the same experience as the kings did, lifetimes ago. The possibilities of this trip go beyond what you expect.
The number of routes and hikes in and around this mountain makes this tiny place a desirable destination all across the world. Mountaineers everywhere look forward to coming to this one route known as the Haute Route which takes some days and goes from Mont Blanc to Zermatt. It is also a famous couple spot. As you enter the town with steam fogging your train windows, you will want to buy a place here for your heart, forever.
- Cappadocia
Fall out from your general locations and into this fairyland. The land of pixie dust lies in the plains of Anatolia, Turkey. The place is like no other. The honey-combed hills and boulders that reach out for the clouds make you feel like you have left the face of the earth. The history has shaped these towering mountains into something else altogether. The soft stone of this area has been utilized wisely by the inhabitants.
They have gotten shelter below the ground and changed the entire outlook of the place. The rock-cut churches adorned in fresco and a few more museums and such form the highlights in the tourist spots. There are a lot of things that might get you here. But what will make you stay are the cream orange psychedelic lights in the sky. It is a mystery you have to solve.
- Aspen
In the heights of Colorado, USA, lies this town like no other. The mountain ranges go taller as you reach here. The Rockies shine with pride at this town. It is a mix of experiences all ranging from the American grit to the Hollywood glam to the European sophistication. You can always find an adrenaline task to complete here. It is all runs and dives and hikes.
But it can also be calm. It can be a wooden cabin with a fireplace. It can be a cup of eggnog held between warm hands. It can be a guitar, and a book propped. Whatever happens, you can count on Aspen to calm you down. Just take a bottle of bubbles and slide into the moonlit hot spring. It is a place to indulge in exquisiteness and the finest of the lot.
- Sonamarg
The Himalayas always click in for a great time. You can always trust the young fold mountains of India. It is like slipping into a 90’s movie. The valleys having jagged peaks and foggy windows. The settlements here between Srinagar and Leh only show up occasionally and do not have the intended charm. But when the scene around is so beautiful a roadside shop selling Maggie and momos is also enough.
There are a thousand things to see out there. Walk around and about the valley parallel to all these settlements and count all the edges and fingertips of the Thajiwas Glacier. There are higher end treks here too, like the Seven Lakes Trek. There is also a lot looking for people seeking peace and calm. The pilgrimage tours like Amarnath Yatra is something you must go on.
- Jigokudani Monkey Park
This might seem like a highly unlikely place to experience snow, but it is gorgeous nonetheless. It will give you something a lot of places can not- the snow monkeys. The area is not too beautiful when not filled with snow. But when the white frost takes over the city, a different glow comes to it. This is built around a town known as Yudanaka which is basically a hot spring destination.
The main thing for your eyes to behold will be the crazy-eyed macaques here that dive into the pools. This zoo became something when a 1992 film showed these monkeys bathing in natural lakes. Now millions of people come here and try to lure these apes into the pools with bags of food. This snowy experience is like nothing you have ever seen.
- Patnitop
There are very few places as mesmerizing and beautiful than the areas around Jammu. The area gets you by the terrains and the winds, but mainly by the rich culture and colorful, bright smiles. This place is not considered much in the cosmic scale of the Himalayas. People sometimes see it just as a small road stop, hill area. But this place is a cute, little nugget of peace.
As you come across these hills, you leave behind the honks and the tires screeching. If you stay a while, you are sure to run into some great picnic spots. Set up a mat and enjoy a scrumptious lunch on the side tracks. If you go deeper, you will be treated with miles of green and white speckled meadows to run to. If you climb on ahead, you will reach the Natha Top which will give you a tremendous all-round view of the snow-fed mounds.
- Striezelmarkt
Germany has tonnes of markets to indulge in some excellent Christmas shopping. From festoons to plum cakes to gifts for your grandparents to your cousins. You are open to anything you wish. One of these markets is the Striezelmarkt in Dresden. The place here dates right back to the 15th century. The name of the establishment comes from this exquisite piece of cake, Christsollen. You can still find this littered around in shops everywhere.
